Activity: Leaf prints

Learning opportunity: Using materials with increasing confidence, control and dexterity.

Early Learning Goal: Physical Development. Children should handle tools (and) objects... with increasing control.

Resources: A selection of leaves, sponges, paint trays or paper plates, ready mix paint in autumn colours, newspaper, paper to print on.

Organisation: Small groups.

Key vocabulary: Sponge, paint, press, print.

What to do: Supply a paper plate or paint tray with a generous amount of paint and a sponge for each colour. Explain that using a separate sponge for each colour will prevent the colours from becoming mixed. Show how to dip the sponge in the paint and to wipe off the excess paint on the side of the plate or tray.

Show the children how to wipe the underside of a leaf with a painted sponge. The leaf is then placed onto the printing paper, painted side down.

Cover the leaf with a piece of newspaper and demonstrate how to gently press the leaf all over to ensure an even print.

Remove the newspaper and the leaf to see the results.

Display

Make a display of cut-out leaf prints mounted on coloured paper. Intersperse them with leaves of the types used for printing. Can children guess which type of leaf made each print?
